Riskless Profits through High Frequency Trading on NSE or Plain Cheating!?

Guys Check this expose by a whistle blower from a Hedge Fund in Singapore on how the  Operations on NSE were gamed by unscrupulous players and  20% profits shared with the  Tech Provider through Variable Manhours Billings for Managed Services….all faciltiated in collusion with NSE Data Centre Staff and the shocking hush up by NSE Management

Get acquainted with terms like Latency,TBT and  Multilegged IOC to grasp how it was a unlevel playing field

Many NSE Members manipulated  the System to take advantage of being first connected to a low load server or gain unfair latency by first being connected to a backup server when load balancers were in place

They received price information micro seconds before others who did not manipulate the system did and which helped them develop software codes to implement Two legged of Multi legged Immediate or Cancel Orders  to lock in Riskless Profits for themselves and their High Net Worth Clients through High Frequency Trading

Have always held that High Frequency Trading made a mockery of Research & Fairplay and  a Level Playing Field through Tweaking Technology

The Whistle Blower  states that Riskless Profits were being generated by Gaming the System !

Love some of the Phrases used in the Expose  like :

” About Non Collocation persons well they were the people who were never even reached the stadium where the race would take place”

Well! the Risk was in getting caught and now that you, my friend ,Whistle Blower have blown the Whistle !

I hope SEBI gets ALL those who indulged in this at NSE….those who indulged can be accused of Insider Trading too!

That’s providing your detailed  expose of the ‘modus operandi’ checks out

Why do I get the feeling that it will and because it will , it will not be !

Spare a thought for those unsuspecting speculators who did not game the system….their losses were the riskless gains of those who did !

They would be well within their rights and justified to take legal action….this would hopefully force SEBI to act on the whistleblower’s letter to it as linked above

On a Lighter Note at least on this front of HFT ,the BSE must breathe a sigh of relief that it was not involved in such malpractice as Derivatives never had really taken off on the Exchange till recently !….Ah! perhaps BSE  may conclude that it was this NSE Unfair Advantage why Derivatives had never really taken off on BSE !

Note :

  1. Sandeep Gahandule who just won the hamper for Alphageo’s spectacular 720% run in 2014 has contributed three selections for 2015 this time too
  2. Anand, who ran neck to neck with Sandeep till November 2014,when his low priced Rs 7 YBrant  was up against Alphageo has yet again given one really low priced selection Raj Rayon of just 66 paise !
  3. Deccan Gold & Spicejet occur twice as they constitute selections from two different participants
  4. Prices at which Recommended have either been provided by the Participant when making the Reco and reflect the current market price at the time or where they have not stated the price, the last price when they made the reco has been sourced from the BSE & NSE
  5. Most have not given targets for 2015 Selections but the four selections that have been given targets and all are  over 100% + except one,are as follows : Freshtop Fruits Rs 250,PTC India Financial Services Rs 90,Subros Rs 150 and Tata Sponge Rs 1500+
  6. Adani Group finds representation but none from the Ambani Groups ~ perhaps realisation that Reliance Ind has been a losing 5 year Investment thus far and ADAG Companies have struggled
  7. Tata Sponge is the lone entry from the Tata Group.
  8. Media and Aviation have two each in Network 18 and TV Today and Jet Airways & Spicejet respectively
  9. Pharma & Auto Ancilliaries & NBFCs &  IT  & Speciality & Commodity Chemical Sectors are well represented
  10. Can see a few potential turnaround selections as well as a few that have already run up huge in 2014
  11. Tea & Coffee Beverages & Renewable Energy & Defence are represented but none from direct Power,Telecom or Real Estate or Retail
  12. No Bank & no Oil & Gas Major  & No visible Large Cap ! but Three Selections are also traded in the Derivatives Segment, namely,Adani Enterprise,Engineers India & Motherson Sumi

Going to be an interesting few days filtering all the above

Bodal Chemicals @ Rs 35 ~ Shocked at the advice of a Broking House promoted by a Private Bank

Bodal Chemicals @ Rs 35 ~ Shocked at the initial ‘Buy’ advice and inside a month ‘Sell’ advice of a Broking House promoted by a Private Bank

I normally never comment in print or otherwise on the recommendations of others whether I agree or disagree with them ….each to his own counsel….but there are exceptions when clients ask me for an opinion or in scenarios like this below where a wider populace of those investing in equities are impacted…nothing personal

On September 18,2014 the Institutional Desk of a leading Broking House promoted by a leading private bank came out with a Research Report on the Chemical Industry and called ‘Bodal Chemicals ‘ a Turnaround Turk @ Rs 53

Just @ 20 days later and @ Rs 20 down @ Rs 36  on October 9,2014 the Retail Desk of the same Broking House advised their Risk  Averse Clients to exit ! and Long term Clients to average if it drops further into the Rs 26 to Rs 28 range and there was a chance it will !

The Analysts are different in both the reports

Phew ! Sympathise with the Clients of this Broking House !

Those who bought Bodal Chemical in the Rs 50 to Rs 60 range  have lost @ 28% to 40 % inside  20 days ! while this Broking House, while making the Brokerage on the deals ,has not even apologised for the idea and the probability that they were suckered by the management and Promoters!

What is shocking really is not this ill advice…it happens to the best of us…. but what is revealing is one of the reasons they have given to exit now at this huge loss  inside days !

It’s because from September 18,2014 one NRI Promoter and his wife have been selling the Stock !

The same day as the Research Report was released !

Did the analysts  of this Broking House who recommended a ‘Buy’ for ‘Bodal’ meet the Management or Promoters of Bodal Chemicals ?…and if they did ,have they unwittingly become the conduit to recommend to clients of their Employer so there is huge buying and it facilitates the offloading by the Promoter Jayanti Patel and his wife ! ?…or is there something more than meets the Eye here !

The Broking House would have not lost as much credibility as it has now if it had simply apologised for this and recommended all clients to exit and not just the risk averse clients…and with this scenario of a Promoter selling heavily from the release date of the report how can you recommend that clients can consider averaging at lower levels !?….that may be putting more good money after bad ! …would one want to increase exposure in such a company !? and therefore it’s weightage in one’s equity portfolio !?….more so if one observes the 52 Week High & Low is Rs 75 on August 6,2014 and Rs 8.20 on October 24,2013…it’s been dropping from August 6,2014 after having risen dramatically from October 24,2013   read more

Financial Technologies @ Rs 144 ~ A Story of Guts and Glory now Guttered !

Financial Technologies (FTIL)  @ Rs 144 (FV Rs 2)~ A Story of Guts and Glory now Guttered ! ?….though Jignesh Shah ,the Founder Chairman and MD of the FTIL Group (MCX,NSEL and others)states this in his message in the FY 13 Annual Report “….these are tough times the Company is facing and Financial Technologies is making all efforts to come out of such situation”

I don’t own any shares of the FTIL Group but I do have some very good friends and associates who work for it and are extremely wise and forward thinking and manage the FTKMC admirably and who graciously invited me for the MCX Equity Exchange Launch at Hotel Trident where our FM,Mr Chidambaram in his inaugural speech lamented Insider Trading and Speculation but amusingly went on to sound the gong for the Exchange’s first and symbolic Future trade !

Media has justifiably gone to town on the NSEL and FTIL Group Plight ~Realms can be written on this and am sure a Best Seller Book too will finally be published to reveal what went wrong ! and was it a deliberate sinster plan right at the outset ! ~ and what is the extent of Political patronage at the highest level that’s keeping the Group alive and kicking till now !

For Now this is all that I’m going to say…….

From Rs 1224 on November 13,2012 last year the Share price of FTIL sank to Rs 102 on August 30,2013 and had recovered since then to Rs 160 levels

However today the Share Price intraday dropped over 10% to Rs 140 levels as yesterday on the eve of the AGM the Auditors Deloitte Haskins & Sells has announced that their report of May 30,2013 on the standalone and consolidated results of FTIL results as on March 31,2013 should no longer be relied on !

Remember the Satyam fiasco and how the Auditors Pricewater House had released a similar note warning that the last 39 quarters of their audited results should not be relied on ! ~ this went all the way back from 2009 to 2001 !

FTIL’s EPS for FY 13 was Rs 70 ~ It’s June Q 1 FY 14 shows Rs 17 ~ but Deloitte now tells us not to rely on their report !

FTIL owns nearly 100% of the troubled National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) which is embroiled in a Rs 5600 crs payment crisis ~ there is more than meets the eye in NSEL ~ FTIL has already lend Rs 173 crs to NSEL to fund payouts to smaller investors ~How in Hell did this hole in NSEL go undetected for so long !? ~ the answer is suspected to lie in that there was hardly any internal control and deliberately so ~ there was no eternal regulation worth mentioning~ the Operators or Borrowers, the Exchange Administration, the Directors and FTIL as the near 100% Owner  were all seemingly colluding parties ~thousands of crores of borrowed monies were created for the benefit of just a chosen few ,and some were director related parties, through scheming financial structured products, supposedly backed by physical comfort of commodities in warehouses ~ these products were aggressively hawked to high networth investors by a network of brokers, including leading names like Motilal Oswal,Anand Rathi and India Infoline, for a few additional interest points and rolling commission or brokerage ! ~ Most of these funds  are suspected to be diverted away from the exchange read more

Emkay Global @ Rs 17 in trouble as NSE rejects application to annul trades of October 5 2012

Emkay Global @ Rs 17 in trouble as NSE rejects application to annul trades of October 5 2012

On October 5,2012 Emkay Global suffered a Loss of Rs 51 crs on squaring up trades that were executed from a Templeton order  punched in by a dealer erroneously in  more quantum than it should have been ~ the order was of a value of Rs 17 lakhs but the dealer instead punched in 17 lakhs nos  and the order value shot to nearly a Rs 1000 crs ! of which nearly Rs 700 crs was executed before the mistake was discovered and thus had to be squared off

NSE after an extensive investigation just rejected Emkay’s application to cancel all the relevant Trades of October 5,2012 early morning as there was material error in punching

Emkay has also send a notice to the BSE as below

“We are in receipt of NSE letter dated April 30, 2013 on May 01, 2013 late in the evening regarding the decision of the Relevant Authority of NSE on the application made by us for the annulment of the error trade of October 5, 2012. The Relevant Authority of NSE has denied our application for annulment of trades arising out of a clearly erroneous entry of sale order on October 05, 2012. The Company is considering various legal course of action including challenging the decision in exercise of its statutory right to appeal.”.’

Emkay is quoted at Rs 17 (FV Rs 10) giving a market cap of Rs 41 crs ~ Promoters hold 73.24%

In March/April 2006 it came out with a Rs 75 crs IPO offerring 62.50 lakhs shares in the price bad of Rs 100 to Rs 120 ~ and the following year 2007/8 was their best with Profit of Rs 23.50 crs ~ since then the next four Financial Years  dragged down a loss in 2008/9 followed by Rs 8 crs each profit in the following years and again drifted to a marginal loss in FY 11/12

Current Book Value is Rs 50+ with Networth at Rs 134 crs of which Equity is Rs 24+ crs

Clearly Rs 51 crs loss will be a huge setback to Emkay ~ destabilising their operations big time in very competitive times ~ Emkay will surely appeal

Several years ago the Emkay Promoters had sought a meeting with me as one of their Broking Clients and my Advisory one had made a 600% + gains on his Portfolio inside a year and they wanted to meet with the guy whose advice did this ! ~ they had only recently set up a Research Team taking several analysts from a leading stock market media  house  and they wanted to tie up with me  ~ did not work out as I must have quoted too high I suppose !

…and it’s sad luck that Emkay did this deal on NSE and not BSE for BSE may just have helped them out given it’s past track record for doing so when during Broker Dominated Boards, EDs and Presidents have had to resign for malpractices ~ like opening the Exchange in the middle of the night to insert trades ! or else some brokers would have gone bankrupt on their positions ! read more
