Alphonso Mango Season is here …It’s Time for some Devgad ‘Haphus…even if they yet cost the heaven !…blame it on a Summer Addiction !’
Mumbai yet retails for Rs 550 a dozen => that’s US $ 10 a dozen…for a smaller size than one would expect….my Californian Friend tells me they are retailing for US $ 45 a dozen there and that too for a small size fruit….that’s @ Rs 2400 for a dozen or Rs 200 for one piece !….USA removed the Ban on Mango Exports from India @ Three years ago
However the Ban remains in Australia….and an Indian acquaintance settled in Queensland has not tasted Alphonso for 20 years now ! as they visit India only in Winter !….says they have forgotten it’s taste !…How can anyone forget the taste of a Devgad ‘Haphus’ !
…and we Gujjus,some of us atleast, traditionally beat the pulp out of the mangoes by hand and not blender,to prepare a delicious ‘Aam Rus’ that goes with fresh hot ‘Puris’ and White ‘Dhoklas’….some of us even add ‘Charodi’ to the ‘Aam Rus’…that’s Chirongi-sapida,a kind of small dry fruit
